Definition: An element
in a sentence that, whilst not essential to the
structure of the sentence, amplifies its meaning. An
adjunct establishes the circumstances in which the
action expressed by the verb take place.

several different categories including Temporal, Locative,
Modicative, Causal, Instrumental, Agentive and Conditional
adjuncts which are explained as follows:
Time related
or Temporal adjunct - when or how often something
happened, duration and frequency. Examples: Yesterday,
tomorrow, two months
Place
related or Locative adjunct - where something happened.
Examples: She played in the garden. She went to Paris
Modicative
adjunct - how something happened. Examples: She sat with
difficulty. They played noisily
Causal
adjunct - why something happened, the reason or purpose.
Examples: The shoes were tight because they were new.
They went out to play football.
Instrumental
adjunct - what was used to action something. Examples:
He tightened the screw with a screwdriver
Agentive
adjunct - who made the action. Examples: Mrs. Jones
played the piano
Conditional
adjunct - what condition is required for something to
happen. Examples: She would be a new car, if she won the
lottery
